Amazon Toy Catalog 2019 Cover ImageIndustry Insight: Amazon Just Printed and Mailed a Color Holiday Catalog — Did You?

E-commerce behemoth Amazon just mailed its 2019 “Ultimate Wish List for Kids” catalog – re-establishing a proven, time-honored tool of past brick-and-mortar retail stalwarts to differentiate itself from the onslaught of eblasts constantly flooding the inboxes of potential customers. By reviving a traditional –and some may have thought “bygone” − tactic to generate holiday sales, Amazon is in fact delivering a brand new experience to many recipients of its 80-page catalog while including an online aspect as well by including QR codes on select pages to direct readers to corresponding product pages on Read more…

Proofreading: Keeping the Holidays Jolly for Nearly 600 Years
Woman Proofreading with Magnifying Glass Image
As you’re inevitably swept up in the impending mayhem of holiday shopping and festivities, wrapping up year-end projects − and gifts − and frantically searching for extra minutes to do everything else on your to-do list, there’s no more important time to carefully proofread files prior to sending them to us to print. Effective proofreading not only saves time in the production process, but it can also save money on costly reprints and alleviate a lot of stress – regardless of the season. We all know that spellcheck isn’t the answer when it comes to ensuring file content is 100% accurate. While it can identify many spelling, grammatical, punctuation and capitalization errors, it won’t catch them all, and it certainly won’t tag mistakes such as subject misidentification in photo captions, typos in product part numbers, and price errors in point-of-sale materials, catalogs and menus. Read more…

Project Profile: A Success Story Worth Telling

When your brand reaches new heights, the way you graphically convey the news should at least be commensurate with the echelon of success you’ve achieved. Such was the case as we proudly printed Waterford Bank’s 2018 annual report, a project headed internally by Homewood sales representative Dan Curson, which informed shareholders of the bank’s most profitable year in its eleven-year history. Designed by Communica, the 32-page report seamlessly blended sophistication with wow-factor, immediately letting readers with a vested interest know 2018 had a happy ending before they even turned the first page. Communica Graphic Designer Kelsey Badenhop shared: “When we set out to design the Waterford Bank annual report, we had a very specific vision in mind. Dan and the team at Homewood helped us bring that vision to life with elements like soft touch coating, the custom “Waterford Blue” metallic Ink and UV gloss varnish. The end result was an elegant, eye-catching report that our clients could not have loved more. From a process standpoint, we were grateful to have the team at Homewood working with our designer at press checks every step of the way to ensure a seamless transition from design to print.”

Homewood always welcomes the opportunity to partner with creatives like the team at Communica and leverage multiple capabilities in the production of upscale projects such as this. Congratulations once again to Waterford Bank on a phenomenal 2018!

Reaching Your Target Market: Millennials Increasingly Drawn to Print
Millennials Holding Social Media Talk Bubbles
Despite an all-digital-all-the-time stereotype, trends reveal that millennial engagement with tangible forms of information media and entertainment is on a measurable upswing, as evidenced by the resurgence of once-thought-to-be relics such as vinyl LPs and instamatic cameras. Savvy marketers are taking note and continue to integrate print into their strategies to reach this significant portion of consumers and what will soon be the largest segment of the US population. A recent story on the digital marketing news site by Ellie Morley-Smith, millennial, and marketing and communications manager of the UK’s APS Group, takes a closer look at the mostly true digital stereotype and why print will continue to play a vital role in reaching millennials into the foreseeable future.
Holiday Mailer Quandary? We Can Help.
Pen and Checkmarks
We’ve helped alleviate holiday-related stress for customers by fulfilling their year-end greetings on time, on target and on budget for over 80 years. That’s a lot of eggnog, and a lot of experience taking the anxiety out of conveying that perfect message during a truly hectic time, whether it’s in the form of a card, booklet or dimensional mailer. In addition to having mad print, finishing and kitting skills, Homewood’s team knows the ins and outs of postal regulations and policies to help make production and distribution of your project as seamless as possible. Here are a few tips to help ensure we can bring your well-wishes to reality and into the hands of your clients before they wind up 2018:

1. Submit your art file(s) as early as possible! Procrastinators risk being rewarded with a lump of coal!

2. Let us know if any special stocks, inks, die cuts, finishing or bindery techniques are needed. We can accomplish many coating, finish and bindery processes inline, helping save you time and money. However, special-order items or tasks can add to lead time.

3. See #1.

Above all, be sure to contact us with any questions or a heads-up about your upcoming holiday greeting or customer appreciation project needs. Chances are we have a more efficient way to meet your objective, helping keep your holidays peaceful, happy and bright.

Homewood Press holiday cardsHolidays Part Deux:
Greeting Thought Provokers

This vision of Homewood greetings from holiday seasons past might not dance in your head, but it could spur an idea or two for a holiday greeting for your organization if you’re at a loss. It also shows some of our unique capabilities, including: die cuts and custom folding as shown on the poinsettia and gingerbread men on the left, and ornaments and multi-part paper tree pop-up card on the right; assembly and fulfillment of dimensional projects like the phone charger kit in the center; and, unconventional elements like the pull-strip holiday self-mailer in the foreground and the seriously oversized greeting card in the back.

Out and About

Homewood mixed business with pleasure for a good cause over the past month. Members of our operations team were wowed as leading printer manufacturers and suppliers put their latest through the paces at PRINT®18 in Chicago.

Meanwhile, we were proud to support an organization that does so much for the lesser served in our community by fielding our top handicappers to compete in the Cherry Street Mission’s Masters Tournament at the renowned Highland Meadows Golf Club.

Paper Demand Nears All-Time High Due to eCommerce, Manufacturing, Recycling Trends
Homewood Press Paper Mill Image
Many factors have converged in recent years resulting in demand outpacing supply and subsequent price increases for paper products. According to reporting from multiple sources including Ibis WorldCNN Money and, primary causes include evolving consumer spending habits, growth in eCommerce and industrial production, and US paper mill closures and product changeover.

eCommerce Store LogosConsumer confidence continues on the upswing due to a strengthening US economy, meaning more goods are being produced, packaged, promoted and purchased. This also correlates to an increased need for wood pulp and industrial capacity to make packaging materials, including shipping cartons. Coupled with the continual surge in eCommerce, the demand for kraft and corrugated is infringing on resources to produce specialty and graphic-quality paper traditionally used for collateral marketing material. This phenomenon is sometimes referred to as “the Amazon Effect.” Of significance, the reigning champ now has a slew of competitors joining the eCommerce ranks, notably traditional brick-and-mortar retailers Walmart and Target. And, adding to the perfect storm of high demand was the shutdown of nearly 20 paper mills in the southern U.S. last year due to Hurricanes Harvey and Irma.

What does it mean for consumers and commercial enterprises that heavily rely on specialty paper as well as kraft and corrugated for packaging and more? The possibility that stocks once readily available may no longer be, requiring extended lead time or cost. More importantly, what does it mean for you? Contact us to learn more and be sure to confer with your Homewood representative for options to help keep your print projects budget-friendly.

Metal Swatch Book Enables Door Hardware Purveyor to Show Actual Product Finish

SOSS Metal Swatch Catalog ImageSince the turn of the last century, the name SOSS has been synonymous with invisible hinges and continual innovation in the door hardware industry. Today, the company’s products can be found in countless businesses and homes, including the White House. In planning a redesign of its catalog for 2018, the long-time customer approached Homewood with an idea to show actual metal chips as an alternative to the printed metallic swatches shown in its previous catalog. Homewood accepted the challenge, handling project management as well as printing, finishing and bindery, while working with a pair of third-party suppliers that respectively produced and applied the bronze, brass, chrome and a range of other real metal swatches in all finishes offered by SOSS Door Hardware. The resulting realism and dimensional quality of the catalog allows prospective customers to better envision how SOSS hinges and latches will fit their interior aesthetic, helping the company to close more sales, faster. According to SOSS Vice President of Sales and Marketing, Mike Nowakowski, “Our president took one look at the book and was speechless; he is very proud of this catalog.” He also shared that “sales representatives are calling it the ‘best catalog ever from SOSS.’” Contact Homewood for more details.
