Convo for the weekend:
Being “Green” is great, however, many people think they are saving the environment by reading information via digital text. We are here to tell you that this isn’t always the best choice.
Even though at this point in time it is the new fad, the long-term effects are not good for our Earth.
Did you know that: 63.5% of all paper consumed in the USA was recovered for recycling in 2010, which has increased by 77% since 1990. Compared to the 3.16 million tons of electronic waste that was generated in just 2008 alone (can you image now in 2013?)… and that 50-80% of that electronic waste is disposed over seas unsafely.
“Printed products are a renewable resource. Once a printed product has served its purpose, it re-enters the cycle as a new product”..unlike most electronic products.
Have a great weekend everybody!
Convo for the weekend:
Commercial printers are bombarded with the simple statement: “Using paper kills trees”.
This is the perfect time to tell everyone that commercial printers (like ourselves) do everything we can to preserve the Earth.
Many people have this image in their head that commercial printers are using random tress from random places and just cold heartedly cutting them down. We are here to tell you that this is not the case.
-Did you know that: even though the primary raw material for our industry is trees, they are actually from well-managed forests or farms that are constantly being re-planted?
It has also came to our attention that: A report from the Sweden’s Royal Institue of Technology calculated that a person using a 160-watt computer with a 120-watt screen (which is a normal computer usage) who reads an online newspaper for 30 minutes a day actually does more environmental damage that if they had purchased the paper edition.
Homewood Press gave a plant tour to Eagle Academy today. These high school students were shown how our operation works on a daily basis and were also given some pretty cool samples to take home. They had some really interesting questions for us and we hope they enjoyed their visit.
Thank you everyone who participated!
On Friday, May 10th, Homewood Press installed their very own LED lighting. This will cut our watt usage in half, which is an energy savings of 53 percent!
Some fun facts about LED (Light Emitting Diode) Lighting:
1. The first practical visible-spectrum (red) LED was developed in 1962 by Nick Holonyak, Jr., while working at General Electric Company
2. LED light bulbs have no Mercury – or other hazardous material used in manufacturing.
3. There are 32,256 individual LED lights in the ball used for the New Years Eve Times Square ball drop!
4. Replacing half of all Christmas bulbs with LED bulbs would cut U.S. energy bills by $17 billion annually.
“Reports of a natural gas smell sparked the evacuation of several buildings in downtown Great Falls on Wednesday morning, but it turns out scratch-and-sniff cards were to blame and not a widespread gas leak”.

With this in mind, Homewood Press wants to remind everyone that Natural Gas is a serious matter and should be educated to all.
Our Rub4Scent technology has given us the opportunity to give people one of the most realistic Natural Gas Scents in the United States, however, we want to reach out to more people and would love to do so. If you are a company that would be interested in educating citizens on Natural Gas, email us at firstname.lastname@example.org
Homewood Press was asked to participate in a local newspaper article that talked about how local businesses are taking green initiative steps to becoming a more earth friendly community. The newspaper is called Toledo City Paper and the article is called Waste Not. Homewood explains that they have been recycling since the 90’s, however in 2008 they installed their very own on-site wind turbine. So far this year, Homewood has saved 534 trees, over 219,000 gallons of water, 132,000 kilowatt hours of energy, over 12,000 gallons of fuel and 107 cubic yards of landfill.

Homewood Press is one of the top 3 commercial printers in “Best of Lake Erie West Business 2013”.
We are very pleased to be on this list and hope to stay on here for many years to come.
Check it out!
